Karel Appel
Il a étudié au Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten d'Amsterdam entre 1940 et 1943, et a commencé à exposé en 1946. Il tire ses influences de Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse et Jean Dubuffet. Il rejoint le Nederlandse Experimentele Groep, puis le mouvement CoBrA en 1948, avec Corneille, Constant, Asger Jorn, Jan Nieuwenhuys et Christian Dotremont.
En 1950, il va à Paris, et développe une réputation internationale en voyageant au Mexique, aux États-Unis, en Yougoslavie et au Brésil.
Il a fait ses études à l'Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts à Amsterdam.
Sa première exposition se fit en 1946.
« CoBrA » : Copenhague, Bruxelles et Amsterdam : le lieu de résidence des artistes ayant participé à ce mouvement.
Dutch painter, sculptor and ceramicist, Karel Appel was probably the most recognized artist from the Netherlands in the second half of the 20th century.
He was well known for his Expressionist paintings with uninhibited colors and powerful brushwork. In 1948, he helped create Reflex, a group consisting of Dutch and Belgian painters.
